Project Overview
Located in North Perth, this project involves a two-storey addition to an existing character residence, introducing a contemporary layer while preserving the home’s presence within the streetscape. The design adopts a dual-typology approach, retaining the original single-storey dwelling at the front while positioning a new addition toward the centre and rear of the site.
The extension is deliberately set back to maintain the prominence of the existing home, establishing a clear distinction between old and new. Material contrast and considered detailing reinforce this relationship, while landscaping plays a key role in shaping the arrival experience and softening the built form. A central courtyard and roof garden introduce moments of light, privacy and greenery, creating a sequence of spaces that connect the original structure to the contemporary addition.
The home is designed to prioritise flexibility, natural light and long-term adaptability. Open-plan living areas extend to north-facing outdoor spaces, supporting strong indoor-outdoor connections, while adaptable zones including a home office and separate retreat areas respond to evolving lifestyle needs. Careful setbacks, retained vegetation and articulated upper-level forms reduce visual bulk and maintain amenity for neighbouring properties, resulting in a residence that is both contextually responsive and highly liveable.
