Project Overview
Located in West Perth, this project introduces a new two-storey residence designed to respond to both the historic character of Cowle Street and the evolving scale of its surrounding context. The built form balances a modest street presence with a more expansive rear expression, reflecting the transition between traditional single-storey homes and larger contemporary dwellings within the area.
The architecture draws from Victorian-era influences, reinterpreting elements such as verandahs, proportion and materiality through a contemporary lens. A restrained palette of brick, render and timber establishes continuity with the surrounding streetscape, while vertical elements and a semi-cantilevered verandah introduce a refined architectural expression. The design responds directly to the site’s slope, stepping through the section to create layered spaces that connect seamlessly with landscaped areas and private outdoor zones.
At the centre of the home, a courtyard organises the internal layout, bringing natural light and ventilation deep into the plan while maintaining privacy from the street and adjacent public spaces. Living areas are arranged to maximise outlook and amenity, with flexible zones including a lower-level retreat and guest accommodation supporting evolving living arrangements. Integrated sustainability initiatives, including material selection and performance-led design strategies, contribute to long-term environmental efficiency, resulting in a residence that is both contextually responsive and forward-thinking.
