Project Overview
Set within the historic fabric of Guildford, the Swan Street IGA introduces a contemporary addition to the original Barker’s Warehouse. The design balances preservation with progression, supporting the evolving needs of the local community while maintaining the integrity of the existing heritage building.
The addition is conceived as a restrained contrast, drawing from Guildford’s colonial character through references to masonry, symmetry and materiality, expressed in a contemporary form. A composed architectural approach ensures the original structure remains the focal point, while a palette of face brick, timber and metal grounds the project within its local context. Glass elements introduce transparency and activate both Swan Street and the adjoining courtyard. A glazed threshold provides a light-touch connection between old and new, allowing each element to remain distinct while functioning cohesively.
Designed to accommodate a fresh food market, the project strengthens the site’s role as a local hub. Expanded retail space, improved circulation and public-facing amenities, including courtyard areas, upgraded entry points and bicycle parking, enhance accessibility and day-to-day use. The result is a considered extension that preserves heritage value while ensuring long-term relevance.
