Project Overview
Located in Subiaco, this project involves the careful extension and reconfiguration of an existing character residence. The design seeks to preserve the established rhythm and heritage value of Coolgardie Street while introducing contemporary spaces that support modern living.
The approach centres on a clear distinction between old and new. A two-storey rear addition is set back from the original dwelling, minimising its presence from the street while allowing the existing home to remain the primary architectural expression. Material selections reference the original red brick through a refined palette of contemporary brick and muted render, creating continuity without imitation. Internally, the extension is defined by open-plan living spaces that connect seamlessly to the landscape, with large areas of glazing framing the retained jacaranda tree, garden and pool.
The home is designed to prioritise flexibility, natural light and long-term usability. Carefully positioned skylights and north-facing openings draw light deep into the plan, while the upper level accommodates a private master retreat overlooking the rear garden. Outdoor living areas extend directly from the main living spaces, supporting a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Considered setbacks and massing minimise impact on neighbouring properties, ensuring the project responds sensitively to both its immediate context and broader streetscape.
